Sequence Creative have just completed their second television commercial for stage show Top Gear Live.
Kevin Chapman, Head of Production, said, “This year’s event will be bigger and bolder than ever, so we had to come up with a concept to match. The brief was to encourage viewers of the Top Gear series to attend the Top Gear Live event in October at the NEC. We of course used The Stig but this time included live action stunts to achieve a suitable delivery of Top Gear visual style and excitement, along with the correct messaging for the client.”
The star of the show was undoubtedly the not yet released Aston Martin Vanquish, driven by The Stig a month before anyone in the industry could lay their hands on it. Power sliding the £180K supercar indoors was quite a sight. Add to that a stunt rider jumping off shipping containers, and it's a heady mix of fun, speed and adrenaline.
Mike Fisher, Director, explains “The challenge was to frame and light the space in such a way as to show its vast size, but also to be close to the action. Shooting mainly with Steadycam allowed fluid movements right up next to the drifting car - we needed a camera that was small, maneuverable and could capture details in low light conditions, and the Arri Alexa M was the right tool for the job”
“Shooting S-LOG at frame rates between 25 and 120, and using uncoated Zeiss Super-Speed lenses gave a beautifully distinct look - combine that with DOP Paul O’Callaghan’s lighting style, an awesome car, skilled trails rider and The Stig, and we’ve got something that looks pretty cool.” Kevin Chapman added “Last year’s commercial was so successful that Sequence Creative were invited back to pitch again. This year’s event will be even bigger and more spectacular so the advert had to reflect this and the ongoing campaign”.
Post production was completed at Sequence Post in Fitzrovia. The final grade was completed in the company’s brand new DaVInci Resolve theatre, enhancing the steely, industrial mood of the piece with great effect. Sequence Founder and Head of Post, Ben Foakes said: “We are delighted to welcome Top Gear Live back to Sequence after the great success of the 2011 campaign. We’ve developed our technical infrastructure considerably since last summer, which has allowed Mike and the post team to push the post work flow harder and achieve greater looking results, particularly during the grading process.
I am very proud of what the Sequence Creative team has created and in particular our ability to turn creative visions and storyboards into on-screen gems. It is another feather in the cap for the team, who are consistently setting the Sequence brand apart in the Post sector as a centre for creative excellence as well as technical prowess.”
