Sit down with Jonathan Goldstein, Managing Director of GOLDSTEIN

01 August 2017

Jonathan Goldstein

This week we hear from the talented Jonathan Goldstein. He's the founder of GOLDSTEIN, the music and sound consultancy. They have created an impressive body of award winning work for film, advertising, experiential marketing and sound branding clients.

1. What inspired you to start a music production company?

Having worked as a freelance composer for years, I decided to use my experience to set up a music house and collaborate with the wealth of talent that’s out there in new and established composers looking for opportunities.

2. What does your job entail?

The job entails taking briefs from ad agencies, assigning the right composers for the project and overseeing their work. After some creative to-ing and fro-ing, we share the work with the agency and wait for their feedback...

3. What skills do you need to be a good composer?

A good sense of humour! Attention to detail. Energy and a lot of humility.

4. What’s your favourite part of your job?

Hearing the unexpected in a composer’s work (“I wouldn’t have thought of that!”) and being inspired by unusual and challenging references.

5. If there were one thing you could change about your job what would it be?

Indecision. Client-power overruling agency expertise (that’s the worst). Too many chiefs!

6. Has your style been influenced by other composer’s work?

All artists are influenced by others. I’m most inspired when I hear an idea that cuts to the chase instantly and makes its point known in any music, be that classical, pop or film. You need that skill in advertising. There’s no time to hang around!

7. What do you think you’d be doing if you weren’t a composer?

I would love to have been a neurosurgeon but I was rubbish at maths and science so that was never going to happen!

8. What projects are you most proud of?

All the hardest and most unexpected gigs. NSPCC ‘Cartoon’; our recent work for Centrepoint shopping centre in the Middle East; a rap for a short film, ‘Born A Believer’, about a boxing charity; the trailer for The Voice, featuring a singing black raven.

9. What are your latest projects?

An epic rugby spot for Gillette based around Jim Telfer’s inspirational speech to the English Rugby Team on the ’97 British Lions Tour. And, by stark contrast, some very funky work for Pantene.

10. Lastly after a long day of composing what do you like to spend your spare time getting up to?

Chopping vegetables and getting busy in the kitchen!
