For the brand new live-action Netflix series Altered Carbon, Studio AKA were approached by series producers Skydance Television to animate the dark tale of THE PATCHWORK MAN as told by young protagonist, Takeshi Kovacs:

Once upon a time, in a village in the woods, Mad Mykola threw the town’s children into the mill and sewed their bits and pieces together. Into one huge, strong, creepy thing: The Patchwork Man.”

Based on the classic cyberpunk novel by Richard Morgan, Altered Carbon is an intriguing story of murder, love, sex, and betrayal set over 300 years in the future.

Society has been transformed by new technology: consciousness can be digitized; human bodies are interchangeable; death is no longer permanent. Takeshi Kovacs is the lone surviving soldier in a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned – on ice – for centuries until Laurens Bancroft, an impossibly wealthy, long-lived man, offers Kovacs the chance to live again. In exchange, Kovacs has to solve a murder… that of Bancroft himself.

The nightmarish tale of the ‘Patchwork Man’ debuts in the third episode of the series in the form of three animated segments directed by Studio AKA’s Kristian Andrews.

This was an unusual opportunity to explore some deeply sinister subject matter and perhaps our team relished animating all that gore a little too much!” says Andrews.

Altered Carbon, created by Laeta Kalogridis and produced by Skydance Television, premieres on Netflix from February 2nd, 2018.
